Your files never leave your device. How privacy works

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Choose your AVIF files, or drag them onto the box above. You can add as many as you like.
  2. Each one is converted to JPG on your own device. This usually takes a second or two per file.
  3. Download the JPG files one at a time, or all together as a ZIP file.

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is a newer image format from the Alliance for Open Media, a group that includes Google, Apple, Netflix and Microsoft. It makes files smaller than JPG or WebP at the same quality.

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can all show AVIF, so more and more websites use it and saved pictures arrive as .avif files. Most other software has not caught up yet, which is where JPG helps.

Will the JPG look the same?

To the eye, yes. It is saved at high quality (92 out of 100) unless you move the Quality slider, at the same width and height as the original. The JPG will usually be a larger file than the AVIF.

See-through backgrounds

JPG cannot store transparency, so see-through areas are filled with white, or with the colour you pick under Background. Use AVIF to PNG to keep them see-through.

Questions and answers

Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you use it for.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The work is done by your own browser, on your own device. You can check: convert one image, switch off your internet connection, then convert another. It still works, because nothing is being sent anywhere.
It says my browser cannot read the file. Why?
This converter uses the AVIF support built into your browser, which arrived between 2020 and 2024 depending on the browser. Update your browser to the current version and try again.
Can I do many files at once?
Yes. Choose or drop as many as you like. They are converted one after another, and you can download them all together as a ZIP file.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in any current browser on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac and Linux. Nothing needs to be installed.
