Image Compressor

Make JPG, PNG and WebP images smaller while they still look the same. You see the new size before you download, and nothing is uploaded.

Your files never leave your device. How privacy works

How to compress an image

  1. Choose your images, or drag them onto the box above.
  2. Each one is compressed on your own device. The list shows the old size, the new size and how much was saved.
  3. If you want smaller files, move the Quality slider down. Then download them one at a time or as a ZIP file.

How does compression make a file smaller?

A photo contains far more fine detail than the eye notices. Compression simplifies the detail you would not miss, and stores what is left more cleverly. Done well, a photo can drop to a third of its size and look unchanged.

The width and height in pixels stay the same. To change those as well, use the Image Resizer.

Which quality should I choose?

The slider starts at 75, a good balance for photos. Between 60 and 80 most people cannot tell the result from the original. Below 50 you start to see blocky patches and smeared edges.

If one of your files cannot be made smaller at the quality you chose, it is left as it was and the list says so.

JPG, PNG and WebP are treated differently

JPG photos are re-saved with a modern JPG encoder that produces smaller files than most cameras and phones do.

PNG files are made smaller by reducing the number of colours to at most 256. That suits logos, screenshots and drawings and keeps see-through backgrounds. A photo saved as PNG shrinks far more if you set Save as to JPG.

WebP files are re-saved as WebP at the quality you choose.

Questions and answers

Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you use it for.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The work is done by your own browser, on your own device. You can check: compress one image, switch off your internet connection, then compress another. It still works, because nothing is being sent anywhere.
I need the file under a set size, such as 100 KB. How?
Use Compress Image to KB. You type the limit and it finds the best quality that fits.
Does compressing change the width and height?
No. Only the file size changes. The picture keeps the same number of pixels.
Can I do many files at once?
Yes. Choose or drop as many as you like. They are compressed one after another, and you can download them all together as a ZIP file.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in any current browser on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac and Linux. Nothing needs to be installed.
