How to compress an image to 50 KB

  1. Choose your photo, or drag it onto the box above. The target is already set to 50 KB.
  2. The tool tries different quality levels on your own device and keeps the best-looking result that is 50 KB or less.
  3. Check the final size shown next to the file, then download it.

What to expect at 50 KB

As a rough guide, a photo of about 600 to 800 pixels on its longer side fits in 50 KB and still looks clean. Simple pictures with plain backgrounds fit at larger sizes; busy, detailed ones need to be smaller.

If your picture is bigger than that, it is scaled down automatically. A smaller, clean picture looks better than a large one full of blocky patches. The result shows the final width and height, so you always know what you are getting.

Where a 50 KB limit comes up

Online application forms often ask for a photo or a scanned signature under a small limit such as 50 KB. The limit keeps their storage small and their pages fast.

Read the form’s own instructions before you upload. Some forms also set a smallest allowed size, or an exact width and height in pixels. If yours gives pixel measurements, set those first with the Image Resizer, then compress the result here.

How the best quality is found

Guessing a quality setting and checking the size by hand takes many tries. This tool does the trying for you: it saves the picture at different quality levels, measures each result, and keeps the highest quality that fits.

The result is a JPG file, the format upload forms accept most widely.

Questions and answers

Will the file be exactly 50 KB?
It will be as close to 50 KB as possible without going over, usually within a few percent. Here 1 KB is counted as 1,000 bytes, the stricter of the two ways of counting, so the file passes whichever way your form counts.
Why did my picture get smaller in width and height?
A large picture cannot fit in 50 KB at a quality worth having. Reducing the number of pixels keeps what remains sharp and clean.
My form wants a set width and height as well. What do I do?
Set the width and height first with the Image Resizer, then bring the result here to bring the file size down.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The work is done by your own browser, on your own device. You can check: compress one photo, switch off your internet connection, then compress another. It still works, because nothing is being sent anywhere.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you use it for.
