Compress Image to an Exact Size in KB

Type the size limit your form or email allows. The tool finds the best quality that fits under it and shows the exact final size before you download.

Your files never leave your device. How privacy works

How to compress an image to an exact size

  1. Type your limit in the Target size box, or tap one of the common sizes.
  2. Choose your photo, or drag it onto the box above. The tool tries different quality levels on your own device and keeps the best-looking result that fits.
  3. Check the final size shown next to the file, then download it.

Why an exact size is hard to hit by hand

Most programs let you choose a quality level but do not tell you the file size until after you save. Getting under a limit means saving, checking, and trying again.

This tool does the trying for you. It saves the picture at different quality levels, measures each result, and keeps the highest quality that fits your limit.

When a picture has to shrink in pixels

A large photo cannot fit in a very small file at a quality worth having. When lowering the quality alone would leave blocky patches, the tool also reduces the width and height, because a smaller clean picture looks better than a large damaged one.

The final width and height are shown next to each file. If your form asks for exact pixel measurements, set them first with the Image Resizer, then compress the result here.

How sizes are counted

Some systems count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024. This tool uses 1,000, the stricter of the two, so a file made for a 100 KB limit passes whichever way the form counts.

The result is a JPG file, the format upload forms accept most widely.

Questions and answers

Will the file be exactly the size I typed?
It will be as close as possible without going over, usually within a few percent of the limit.
What is the smallest size I can ask for?
You can type any size from 5 KB up. Very small targets mean a very small picture: at 20 KB, expect a few hundred pixels across.
My form has a smallest allowed size too. Is that a problem?
Usually not. The result lands just under your target, so it sits above any lower limit. The exception is a picture that is already tiny: check the size shown before you upload.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The work is done by your own browser, on your own device. You can check: compress one photo, switch off your internet connection, then compress another. It still works, because nothing is being sent anywhere.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you use it for.
Can I do many files at once?
Yes. Choose or drop as many as you like. They are compressed one after another, and you can download them all together as a ZIP file.
